“Baking Dreams Into Reality” Season 2 Finale Recap

“Baking Dreams into Reality”
So, it’s finale time and this is always a special spot for me in competition because as many of you know I made it to the finale of season 1. The adrenaline, gratitude and raw excitement is a feeling that words cannot describe. The battle these contestants have endured over the past two months is grueling and emotionally and physically draining. Congratulations Nadine, Ryan and Marissa for a great fight, some great cakes and most importantly, congrats on the skills and life lessons that you will be walking away with. Now on to the show!!!
The finale starts off with your average baker’s challenge. This week each contestant is given 90 eggs. Buddy asks them to crack as many as they can in one minute. Marissa wins this challenge with Nadine in a close second. Ryan is the loser in this challenge. Marissa will receive an advantage for winning. As we move on to the second phase of the finale Buddy tells the contestants that they are going to have to walk in his shoes and run Carlo’s Bakery for a day. This means bake a TON of desserts ranging from cookies and pies to cake and pastries. UGH this sounds awfully familiar. The contestants are allowed to use some of the family and staff to assist them with this challenge. Now, to pay homage to season one I need to stop for a minute…where’s the custom cake? Do you mean all they have to focus on for 8 hours is baking? No custom cake? No specialty client? Isn’t that what this is all about? Wow, this will flow a lot better than last season I can tell already. As the winner, Marissa is allowed to pick her team first, Nadine next, and Ryan is given what is left. Marissa picks sister Lisa, Joey as her baker and Herman as her helper. Nadine picks Grace as her sister, Danny as her baker and Cousin Jay as her helper, Ryan is left with Maddalena, Cousin Anthony and Anthony Pizza. Ryan is nervous about his team and quite frankly so am I. Aside from Maddalena (whom I have a soft spot for) his team is filled with rookies while the girls both are outfitted with all stars. With these teams the contestants have to fill up the cases at the bakery and sell, sell, sell for one hour to demanding customers who are on line waiting for a piece of finale goodness. I am literally having flashbacks and want to vomit for each of them. 200 Cookies, 20 Pies, 20 cakes, 100 pastries with 8 hours to make it and 1 hour to sell it! Sounds like a tall order, however without having to make a specialty cake this should be a breeze for these bakers. Marissa out of the gate has her heart set on making more than what is asked of her. Good decision, I wish I had done the same last season, this will definitely help her. Nadine as always is focused, calm and cheerful. I never worry about Nadine. Ryan’s has me worried. Anthony seems to be struggling with Ryan’s recipe for chocolate chip cookies. Hmmm… I find it hard to believe that cousin Anthony doesn’t know to cream the sugar with the butter on a cookie recipe, and if he doesn’t then Buddy, you have serious problems. Not to mention, Anthony is being really difficult and kind of acting like a child. Someone needs to dump some flour on his head. The ovens are hot, these teams are ready and the baking has begun. Buddy walks in with his sister Mary and the taste tests begin. Marissa’s up first and overall they are pleased with the taste of her desserts, a few minor changes but nothing damaging. Next up is Ryan and here’s where the trouble is. Cousin Anthony throws his own leader under the bus and it seems like HE wants to be the star of the show. Buddy and Mary are not impressed by the taste of Ryan’s desserts and he’s aggravated by the lack of teamwork. Aside from a clearly awful biscotti, Nadine’s tasting goes well. As the baking portion of the challenge is over it appears that the girls have a lot more product to put in the showcase than Ryan does. This can prove to be a detriment to Ryan on the selling floor.
There is a line down the street at Carlo’s Bakery and these customers are hungry. They will be working with tickets instead of actual money and each bakery product will be valued at a certain number of tickets. The contestant who sells the most tickets will win, the person who sells the least will be sent to the box truck. Grace is working her selling magic for team Nadine and Marissa’s loud mouth is finally coming in handy for her on the selling floor. I think Ryan is being over powered in this challenge. He runs out of product before the hour is up, this is not a good sign for our boy from Rhode Island. This part of the challenge has ended and it’s time to tally the tickets. Now for those of you who did not watch last season, this was when I was sent home. Me, the loudmouth from Long Island who can sell Ice to an Eskimo did not sell enough tickets, so you never know…let’s see how it turns out for these contestants. After the tickets were tallied the winner, by a mere 39 tickets, is Nadine! Personally I am thrilled I have watched Nadine evolve in this competition and I am psyched for her. She will receive an advantage in the final challenge. Unfortunately for my boy Ryan, he did not sell enough tickets and was sent to the box truck. I’m going to be honest, I have been “team Ryan” for most of this season I am not only sad to see him go home I am sad to see him go the exact same way and at the exact same time that I did in my finale episode. I know I shouldn’t say this but I’m going to because it’s my last blog for the season, I think when people watch this episode again they will see that Cousin Anthony was hand holding Ryan into that Box Truck…just sayin’. Ryan, you had a great season! Congratulations on making it this far in the competition. It’s been inspiring especially because this is not what you do in your daily life. You showed passion, hard work and focus. I hope this experience brings you great success for you and your family.
Marissa and Nadine are left to fight the final fight. It’s 2:30 in the morning and girls, I KNOW how tired you are!!! The final challenge is to make an amazing specialty cake representing what the American dream means to them. Buddy brings in his dream team of decorators and sculptors to assist the ladies. As the winner of the previous challenge, Nadine gets first choice. Team Nadine is Mauro, Juan, Liz and Rachel. Team Marissa is Frankie, Ralph, Sunshine and Kerri. These girls have to tell a story in cake, make it personal, patriotic and four feet tall in ten hours.
The designs the teams come up with are very different. Nadine is deciding on a more whimsical theme with different platforms to represent different stages of her life and education. Marissa’s cake is more emotional and demonstrates her struggles and triumphs. The pressure is on and these two are feeling it. No sleep, emotions flowing, I can only imagine how hard it is to stay focused. Fortunately they are getting a lot of input from their teammates who can do these cakes in their sleep. I am really worried about how Nadine’s cake is coming together. Although I am getting it conceptually I am losing something in the execution. I am not seeing enough color and excitement. I hope she can pull it together. Marissa’s cake is looking stronger. The story she is trying to tell is obvious and although she is playing it safe by doing a stacked traditional cake design it may prove to be beneficial to her.
Times up and it’s off to final judging. Buddy has filled a theater with Cake Boss fans, the rest of the cast from this season and the finalists’ family and friends. This is quite the event. Buddy has his sister Mary alongside him to judge as well as Randy Fenoli from “Say Yes to the Dress” (another show on TLC). When the finalists are brought on stage, their cakes are presented. The contestants are asked to tell Buddy why they should be the Next Great Baker. Nadine is emotional and talks about leaving Minnesota and her family to follow her dream in cake to NY. Marissa equally as emotional tells her story of her struggle in school and never feeling good enough and finally finding something she was good at in the culinary world. I can see how this can go in either favor of these ladies. If we examine Nadine as a competitor throughout this season she was consistent, grounded, professional and creative but her final cake lacked color and grand presence. Marissa had a rocky season, in my opinion. Although she proved she can bake, she was argumentative, catty and lacked focus-yet her final cake shows passion, tells an emotional story and is impressive. SO who takes it all, who is the Next Great Baker????
Marissa Lopez – Congratulations. There was no question that you didn’t have the desire or the passion to win this competition. I hope that the job at Carlo’s Bakery will teach you to be proud of what you can do. If you are confident your clients will have confidence in you. One piece of advice, from one strong personality to another – believe in yourself and what you do. Worry less about those around you, what they do and what they think of you. Use your eyes and ears more than your mouth. You won the opportunity to learn from some of the best, Buddy, Mauro, Joey and the rest of the famiglia. Best wishes, see you in somewhere in the tri-state!
Nadine, Nadine, Nadine…congratulations on a successful season! The world has grand plans for you I’m sure of it. You showed creativity and poise this season, I can take a few lessons from you on how to keep my cool, that’s for sure. I don’t see you working at Carlo’s anyway, I see you opening a cute place that plays happy music and showcases yummy sweets and pretty cakes. Best of luck to you and your future.
A final message to Ryan, Nadine, and Marissa….win or lose-you three made it to the finale of a show watched by millions around the world. You were 3 of 13 people chosen out of tens of thousands. Be proud of yourselves and what you’ve accomplished. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, it only gets better from here, I promise you that. Heads high, be proud of what you’ve endured and produced. Be proud of what you’ve learned and how much you’ve grown as decorators and bakers. Best of luck to you all in wherever this crazy cake ride takes you. I’m local to basically all of you-don’t ever hesitate to pop in-we can eat some cake and laugh about all the behind the scenes madness and fun from Carlo’s Bakery.

America, thanks for listening to my rants, opinions, commentary and babble! This was fun! Thank you TLC for giving me the opportunity to recap these episodes and relive the experience from the other side.

Turnpikes and Tiaras

Recap Episode 9
“Turnpikes and Tiaras”
It’s the Final Four Baby!!  This week’s baker’s challenge is to make a modeling chocolate rose.  Buddy claims it is the hardest bakers challenge yet-you have got to be kidding me, last weeks with the 50 pound bags of sugar was much harder than this…come ON!  Anyway, moving on, the winner gets a Copy Confection edible printer!  That’s like a $1800.00 value, for a modeling chocolate rose?! This late in the competition?!  After watching Buddy demo the rose the contestants have 15 minutes to complete this challenge.  Chad and Nadine are the bottom two but Nadine’s was the deemed the worst.  Marissa and Ryan are Buddy’s top two and the overall winner is Ryan.  Admittedly, in interview, Marissa does not want to lose to Ryan so her ego must be a little crushed.
In this week’s elimination challenge there are no teams.  The contestants are making a cake for Alyssa Camponella, Miss USA (who was also Miss Teen NJ) to celebrate her and the things she loves.  After Buddy demonstrated how to interview a client we learn Alyssa is a girly girl who loves to cook and travel.  Let’s see how they do.
Chad is going UP-6 tiers, pink, bling, feathers and ruffles.  Ryan is planning more of a story board of Alyssa, fashion, food and luggage.  He is also going extremely large scale, can he do this solo?  Nadine is keeping her focus on travel and Miss USA.  I don’t know Marissa’s plan and at this point and neither does she.  My two cents on Marissa is that if she spent as much time focusing on her own talent as she does talking trash about the other contestants she’d be way ahead of the game, but right now she is flustered.  She needs to seek approval on her design so asks Chad for his advice and finally she’s off and running.  You have talent Marissa or you wouldn’t be there, now pull it together and FOCUS ON YOU, you’re running out of time!!
Chad’s cake is very pink and very pageant and Buddy specifically said NOT to make a pageant cake!  Marissa and Ryan are on the same page with their design so we’ll see who can pull it off better.  It seems like these two are always neck and neck with each other.  Buddy enters the kitchen and stops the clock with a curve ball. He tells the contestants that instead of having four hours left he’s leaving them with TWO hours.  He explains that sometimes this is how it goes in the cake biz, a client wants what they want, when they want it.  There is so much more that needs to be done, this is some twist, but hey, that’s the way it goes when you’re in the business of pleasing clients.  The good news is, he brought in help!! Jasmine, Wes, Heather M, and Melo are back to assist!!  Nice to see you guys!!!  Especially Jasmine, it’s been too long Jazz!!  America misses you!  Melo gets paired up with Ryan, Jasmine with Marissa, Nadine with Heather and Wes with Chad.  This is the time for the contestants to really LEAD their team.
Chad’s cake is looking more like my super-duper-sweet-16/I-won-the-lottery-so-drip-me-in-diamonds cake.  Marissa’s is coming together really well, she played up the New Jersey angle which comes easy to her because she’s a Jersey girl also.  Nadine’s cake is looking a little small compared to the others and Ryan’s cake so far is lacking detail, I think he went too ambitious and now is struggling to recover.
So before we go into judging, I have to admit, compared to our pre-finale individual challenge in season 1-these cakes are 1000x better!
Buddy’s sister Grace accompanied Buddy and Alyssa at judging.  They were impressed with Marissa’s cake.  They commended her for telling a story and loved the Jersey tier.  Nadine’s cake was received well, aside from the size; the judges liked the detail and the story telling.  The judges criticized Chad’s cake.  Grace says she’s seen it before and it’s a wedding cake, or a sweet 16 cake.  The overall consensus was that Chad missed the mark on this challenge.  The judges thought Ryan’s cake lacked detail and seemed scattered.  Buddy thought it was boring and lackluster and was disappointed with his vision.  The top two cakes this week are Marissa and Nadine!  To the finale you go, ladies!!  Well done, congratulations.
We’re down to Chad and Ryan and only one spot left for the finale, Buddy has a tough decision.  Chad defends his technical work and his baking skills and feels that Ryan lacks in that department.  Ryan points out that Chad’s cake was not what the customer asked for and accused Chad of playing it safe.  Ryan thinks his drive, determination, ability to learn and keep learning and passion should take him to the finale.  Chad lists his strengths and skill set and adds “I think my qualities are stronger than Ryan’s”.   Who goes?  The man who did what he wanted and didn’t listen to the theme or the client, or the man who hit the theme but lacked execution and detail?  Looks like the lesson learned here is to listen to the client.  It’s the box truck for Chad. You had a great ride, Chad.  I never doubted your desire to be there or your passion for winning.  This experience will bring great success to your business.  Good luck to you, stay humble and kind.
Ryan better step up his game because he’s heading to the finale against the ladies and I think these two are going to put up one heck of a fight!!  Good luck Nadine, Marissa, and Ryan….I have to say I am pleased with who is going to the finale.  What do you all think?  Is it who you were predicting?  Is anyone disappointed?  Want to place a wager on who takes it all?

Metal Mayhem

“Metal Mayhem”
Recap Episode 8
There are 6 people left and we’re two weeks from finale!!!  This week’s baker’s challenge is a triathlon.  Unload nine 50 pound bags of sugar from the loading dock, scale out 35 pounds of flour and frost a sheet tray of cupcakes. Whoa boy and they say bakers don’t work out?!  This is cardio at its best, people.  Ryan and Melo are up first, Ryan is hurting and Melo is not doing much better!  Chad and Megan are next…Chad is going two bags at a time and cruises by Melo and Ryan’s time by 2 minutes!!  Marissa and Nadine are the last to go and Marissa is moving so fast she almost vomits-that’s determination! Nadine and Marissa are neck in neck icing cupcakes, the suspense is killing me!! Marissa wins it and beats Chad’s time by NINE SECONDS!!  She wins a full supply of Kitchen Aid baking tools.  Good game, now hit the showers!
Buddy’s picking teams for the elimination challenge and its boys vs. girls.  The challenge is to make a birthday cake for Mauro the Metalhead!  Who knew?!  Mauro in the mosh pit!?  Heavy Metal, Pyrotechnics birthday cake!  How fun is this going to be?  The design the boy’s team comes up with is solid and seems to fit each of their skill sets well.  The girls are doing a tiered cake with a guitar and a rocker hand on top.
Melo is sculpting away and Chad is critiquing him-of course.  Marissa and Megan aren’t meshing well.  Megan is questioning everything but not really offering any solutions, so it’s getting irritating.  At the end of day 1 things look bleak.  The next morning Buddy expresses how disappointed he is in the work and announces that 2 people are going home this week.  Between Megan’s flames being too thick, and Melo’s unsecured rocker lying face down on the floor, Buddy is livid.  The teams have 2 hours to fix this horror show!
Melo thinks he can salvage the figure off the floor and THANKFULLY decides to start over from scratch.  Megan is redoing the flames.  Time is wasting away!  These are rookie mistakes, things that should have happened in week 1 if at all!!  Flames? Really? It will be a total of 4 hours on flames? Come ON!
I’m not sure how I’m feeling about the girl’s team, Megan is a disaster this week and nothing she’s working on is successful.  Marissa is on Pyro patrol and I think she’s the one wired up about to explode.  She’s all over the place, ranting and raving and cursing.  Their guitar is thicker than a preschool banjo!  They’re having structural issues, it’s not good.  I like the guy’s cake a lot better.  Their cake looks cleaner but that’s not saying much because it’s certainly not their best work.
Time is up and neither of these cakes looks finished.  By the time they arrive at the heavy metal birthday party it looks like the girls cake already went thru the mosh pit, smashed guitar and all.  After an attempt to reattach, the guitar smashes again.  Wah wah wah…
When the boys present their cake the flames worked!  Contrary to what Buddy says I would call their pyro cake a huge success.  The girls on the other hand don’t even get to set off their special effects because Buddy deemed their cake “unsafe”.  Hmm, really Buddy?  Does smooth fondant or a guitar made of flour, sugar and eggs make a cake more “pyro-ready”?  That was a WEAK excuse to fail the girls in this challenge.  Truly, I can’t let that go…unsafe?  That. Is. Ridiculous.
At elimination Buddy expresses his disappointment.  When he asks the boys team about their cake the issue of Melo’s sculpture came up.  It seems like Chad rushed to the occasion to throw Melo under the bus.  I’m starting to question Chad’s loyalty to his team versus his need to always make himself look better.  The team was critiqued for lack of detail and for leaving Mauro’s name off the cake.
The girls explain what they contributed on the cake.  I feel worst for Marissa because she spent a lot of time on the special effects and they didn’t even get to set them off.  Nadine worked on the guitar, drum, stacked the tiers, the hand and the flames.  The structure was the main issue with the cake.  Although Megan takes responsibility for it she doesn’t own up to the fault in it.
Neither cake is acceptable in Buddy’s eyes and two contestants are going home tonight.  After sending Marissa and Ryan off as safe, Melo is the first to go to the box truck. Buddy is looking for the Next Great Baker now, not down the road when Melo can meet his potential.  I’m bummed; I enjoyed watching Melo each week.  BUT, it goes to show you that one fatal mistake this late in the game can cost you your spot in the finale.  Keep it up Melo, you were fun to watch. It’s down to Chad, Nadine and Megan…and Chad’s crying, again, and it saves him, again.  Nadine is saved for her talent and leadership skills but is warned that something still missing and to show it!  It’s the end of the line for Megan this week.   Megan, I will say this, you had a rough start with America but you really redeemed yourself in the weeks that followed.  You have spunk, lady.  Keep it up, it adds character and makes you a better business woman!
Thoughts?  I think it’s tough from this week forward…there is real talent here and real conflict among contestants.  Will personality differences blind them from making great cake?  Will they be able to focus on the end goal or get frazzled and mixed up in the drama?  Final four next week…who’s going to the finale?

“This Kitchen is a Zoo …and lacking a zookeeper”

Episode 6 recap
This week’s bakers challenge brings them into the depths of Carlo’s Bakery-the Oven Room! The contestants have to unload the massive rotating 400 degree oven quickly and accurately. We’re talking cookies, cakes, cheesecakes in a water bath – OUCH! The contestants will be working in pairs and whoever can unload in the fastest time wins and gets to choose the teams for the elimination challenge. If Buddy has to push the stop button or product gets dropped, that team will be disqualified. Mello and Nadine start off, and they’re moving along but a pan gets stuck and Buddy pushes the stop button -DISQUALIFIED. BOO!! Ryan and Heather G are next – they get an A for accuracy but speed is another story. Megan and Heather M are up – speedy start but a dropped cake gets them disqualified. Chad and Marissa are the last to go and they seem to have both speed and accuracy in their favor and they have the fastest time of 2min 30 seconds!! Nice work – almost a full minute faster than Ryan and Heather G. Now they must pick the teams for the elimination challenge, but they are going to choose the teams they DONT want. Marissa chooses people for Chad’s team and vice versa. The teams are chosen and then, the twist comes and Buddy switches the captains. Now Marissa and Chad are leading the teams they DIDN’T want to work with. A true leader needs to learn to work with anyone. I’ve heard that before! It left me working with my nemesis on a wedding cake challenge and we all remember how that went! This should get interesting.
The client for the elimination challenge is..a penguin, a snake, and an alligator? Turtle Back Zoo!! How fun, a zoo cake! This cake must be at least 4 ft tall and must have at least one life sized replica of one of the animals. Wow, I wish we had a challenge like this. There are so many different directions to go with a cake like this. I am excited to see what they come up with. Team Marissa (Marissa, Mello, Heather G and Megan) are making a tree with a swamp. Team Chad (Chad, Ryan, Nadine and Heather M) begin to sketch their design and there is tension already. They are also going to make a tree with a turtle, alligator, etc. but I’m not convinced this will go smoothly. Chad and Ryan are already having problems working together. But more importantly, I’m underwhelmed with the designs of both these cakes – BORING! The teams seem to be doing the exact same cake!! Let’s hope that neither team fails based on a lack of teamwork, can set aside their differences, and focus solely on the client and the finished product. Out of the two teams I definitely think team Chad holds more talent but their tension is clouding their end game. I mean, Turtle Back Zoo – my first element would be a giant 2ft turtle with a zoo on its back but that’s just me. These contestants are sleeping this week!!!
Buddy comes in half way through and is not impressed with team’s cakes. Looks as though they both have sheet cakes with 4 ft trees, rather than an actual 4ft cake. He is not happy and I agree. Anyone can do a sheet cake with a tree made out of PVC pipe. These leaders better step up or step OUT and let someone else lead! Chad and Marissa are both lacking vision this week. They attempt to make changes in design to impress Buddy but from where I’m sitting none of it impresses me one bit, (except Nadine’s Alligator and Mello’s Chimp).
It is clear that Team Chad is having, well, issues. Time management, design, personalities, you name it. Ryan vents his frustrations which made for a lot of “bleeps”. Chad’s being wishy washy and Heather M thinks Ryan’s being a baby, WAAAHH WAAAHH, just make a darn cake and get over it. The power struggle between Chad and Ryan is obvious. They are both talented but may be better off on different teams in the future. Deep down the competition and personality differences between them gets in the way of their team work. They added a bear to boost the size of their cake and maybe should have rethought that. It looks like a dog’s head on a bear’s body – eeesh!! No bueno!
Marissa is frustrated with Heather G, stating that she seems to hide behind the other contestants work. For once Marissa, I agree with you. I have had enough of hearing Heather G say things like “this isn’t what I do, I don’t do this ALL the time.” Okay, well then a) what DO you do? And b) what are you doing in this competition? Megan is also having a hard time falling in line this week and I just hope Marissa can keep her “A-Game” up and lead her team despite adversity. She has had a raw deal for the past two weeks with teammates.
The bakers head out for delivery to Turtle Back Zoo. They have to deliver these cakes up hills on the zoo grounds to a gazebo in 15 minutes, and we know how heavy these cakes can be. Upon delivery we watch the bears face start to melt off and fall apart-not looking good for Team Chad. At elimination Brint Spencer (curator of the Turtle Back Zoo) and Madeline help Buddy judge these cakes. The judges are impressed with the animals on Team Marissa’s cake and although they were impressed with Team Chad’s alligator (made by Nadine) it was no match for their disappointment in Team Chad’s Bear (made by Heather M). Heather M steps up and takes responsibility for the bear. That’s class right there, stepping up and taking ownership of your work, good or bad, is always the respectable thing to do. In the end, Team Marissa is the winner of this challenge and Team Chad is in the hot seat. Ryan calls Chad out on his lack of leadership and direction. Heather M agrees that Chad was not a solid leader. Chad throws Ryan under the bus as the weakest link and calls him a baby. Nadine is forced to name Heather M as the weakest link for her work on the bear. Ryan and Nadine are safe for the work they contributed – the alligator and the structure saved them. Chad and Heather M are left. Heather M thinks she would have performed better had she been given more direction. Chad get very emotional as he brings up his talents despite hardships as a child. He exudes passion and emotion-which I appreciate…until he throws Heather M under the bus by claiming he doesn’t see that passion in her. Ewwwww – not cool, Chad. Just because she’s not crying and spilling out her past doesn’t mean she doesn’t have it in her. In the end, Heather M loses this battle…to the box truck baby. I’m sad to see you go.
I have mixed feelings on this elimination. What about you guys? Heather M was poorly led by her team leader this week and still did her best to step up. I feel like Chad just complained about everyone else and didn’t take ownership for any of his own shortcomings. Talent aside, leadership was desperately lacking. Heather M, do your thing, girl!! Raise that little girl of yours and hold your head high for a job well done and an experience that will last a lifetime.

Episode 5 Blog…Unedited.

OK…So I’m posting it myself….I’m sure TLC will get around to it..eventually.

Engineered Cakes

The holidays are over and it’s back to business. Let’s get started! This week’s baker’s challenge is to decorate a fondant layer in 30 min. There is a lot riding on this challenge because the winner of this baker’s challenge gets a year supply of Satin Ice Fondant AND a Somerset Sheeter!!! Ryan had the cleanest covered cake but there was an obvious standout-my girl Nadine-her fondant layer was beautifully done with draping and little quilt roses. In addition to her fabulous prizes Buddy adds a twist…Nadine can also choose between immunity, or, she can be in charge of picking the teams for the elimination challenge. Nadine is smart and chooses immunity-regardless of what the elimination challenge is we will see Nadine for another week-so far so good in my book!
Cakes that move, smoke and spin are a common practice at Carlos Bakery. Now it’s the contestants turn to show what they can do to impress Buddy. The Elimination Challenge is to make engineered cakes that WOW Buddy. He divides the contestants into 3 teams. Nadine, Melo and Chad; Ryan, Megan, and Heather G, and, Heather M, Minerva and Marissa are paired up. Buddy was kind enough to allow the contestants to shop at the hardware store for any additional product they may need. I was SHOCKED!! Why don’t we just spoon feed them, geez!? I wish we got a trip to the hardware store!!!
Team Ryan decides to do a DJ and a Turntable. Lights, spinning turntable, the works. Marissa tells her team she thinks they should do carnival/amusement Park. Let’s hope these ladies put their differences aside and make their theme park design come to life. Spinning tea cups, merry-go-round, balloon ride?? It seems too ambitious, especially for these 3 decorators. Melo, Chad and Nadine are also creating a theme park. I am hopeful for this design and I think that if there are any contestants who can pull it off its them. Waterslides, dragon with smoke, volcanos…bring it on!!
Ryan’s team’s cake is coming out well, despite Heather G’s needing to have her hand held through this challenge. There is a difference between living in “Pleasantville” and living under a rock and Ryan is frustrated, rightfully so! I was yelling at my TV the entire hour! Heather G’s questions and inability to grasp, (or want to grasp) the concept of the cake was an OBVIOUS distraction. It’s going to slow them down. Megan is working it out! She sculpted the DJ and he looks great-far cry from Sister Grace, Megan-well done!
The ladies team is definitely moving slower than the other two teams. Minerva is working at a snail’s pace! You’re in a competition, Minerva, it’s GO TIME, so let’s GOOOOO!!!! Marissa is panicking and I get it, it’s stressful but to be honest I’m getting a little tired of Marissa constantly being so negative and overly concerned about the other teams being better than her, at this point, just worry about YOUR CAKE sista because you’re running out of time and all I see is a lot of sloppy fondant, wood and tinfoil?, is that tinfoil on the carousel Chad Melo and Nadine’s cake is GREAT! I love it! All their effects work and aside from some sloppy work here and there it was executed wonderfully. What can I say? Aside from trying to make teacups from condoms and chocolate (HUH?), there was no drama, no hiccups. Ahhh relief.
Buddy brings Joey and Frankie to the kitchen to look at the cakes. The special effects work on all three cakes-far cry from last season, nicely done contestants! Must have been that trip to the hardware store-lol
The cakes are brought to the loading dock and they’re met by Frankie and a chainsaw and hockey mask and Joey with a mallet. The ladies cake gets sawed in half (thank god, put it out of its playground amateur misery) and Megan’s DJ is beheaded…guess this means Chad, Melo and Nadine are the winners!!
At elimination Ryan is diplomatic and vocal regarding the issues he had with Heather G. and tells Buddy he felt she was holding back this challenge. I respect that he was honest and straight forward without hitting below the belt. Ryan is honest without being a hothead; I can take some lessons from him-call me sometime, Ryan! ;) Buddy wanted a little more lights but really was pleased with how meticulous it was. Overall he thought it was a great cake.
Minerva’s pace is brought up at Elimination and Marissa speaks her mind without throwing Minerva under the bus. Let’s face it, Minerva did that for herself. The losing cake is obviously the ladies cake and I’m sure we can all agree with Buddy when he sends Minerva to the box truck. Then it gets BIZARRE….Minerva is rejoicing about going home and saying thank you, I think the icing has gone to her brain, and Buddy is getting annoyed. He sent home Tony and Wes to save Minerva-it’s clear in this moment he made a mistake. He’s waiting at the box truck for her to close the door himself!!
I think we can all agree that it was Minerva day to leave. Who’s in the hot seat next week? Are we starting to see who has real talent versus a good personality? Who would you like to see go home next week? For once I’ll keep my opinion to myself because I’m dying to know what you all think. See you in the New Year!!! Safe, Happy and Healthy Everyone.

A letter to my fans…

Hey best fans in the universe!!!!

You guys are SO wonderful. Thank you for all the notes, your passion is inspiring and encouraging. I am so grateful for this experience, it’s changed my life.

I feel lucky that I have successful cake business, in the end, I don’t run a production bakery, I run a cake boutique..this has been a stepping stone for me and this is NOT the end-it’s the start of something GREAT. I hope one day to return to your ‘living rooms’ with some cake personalily and a little sass…on my terms, with my editing (wink)

Stay connected, I hope to bring good news of upcoming stuff in the future. If I could hug every one of you I would. *squeeeeeze* (that was my virtual hug)

THANK YOU THANK YOU. xoxoxox All my love, Corina

NGB Episode Seven: Cakin’ our way to the FINALE!!!!

YAY!!!! Made it to the finale! Thank GOODNESS for Pumpkin Bread, right? Phew…our cakes were certainly not our best last night, I know you all were thinkin’ it, so there, I said it. We all knew it and that made it so hard. I think secretly we were all wishing we could ‘re-take’ the challenge and start over. It’s crazy b/c we came into this used to working alone….teamwork was the challenge…then all of a sudden we’re asked to work alone and it’s like we all forgot how to work!? As I was watching I was literally saying-oh god, make it stop, make this episode STOP!!! Seeing my cake

Interview with Scrumptious Swirls and The Twinery

I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Stacy who runs a popular blog. I got to share with her readers interesting commentary about what I have been up to since the show, some thoughts about what has been shown so far on the series, and I even share a great recipe I love/use for Pumpkin Cake. This interview on the Scrumptious Swirls blog was sponsored by the folks at The Twinery who gave away about $100 in baker’s twine to a lucky winner!

NGB Episode 6 Recap: I now pronounce you…..SAFE!

PHEW, what a nail biter, huh!??! Despite the fact that I knew the outcome of last nights episode I was literally in a ball on the couch biting my nails in suspense. It’s crazy b/c although we lived it we’ve never seen the episodes edited so you never know what you’re going to get.
Let’s talk about it!!! This was a great week for Jay-this is his genre and he certainly proved himself worthy in the wedding cake world. Nice work Jay and team!! Brian, it was so great to see his “softer side” come out-b/t the piping and the delicate flowers.

NGB Episode 5 Recap: Fondant Layers in Space

Hooray!!! Team Corina Fans…we FINALLY got a win!!! and 2 wins at that!
So Buddy liked my fondant layer cake and I was in the top 2 with Jay. Although Jay was the overall winner of the baker challenge I was over the moon about being recognized as one of the top 2! It’s funny, at this point in the competition Jay and I had been dying to work together on the same team and the one time we have the opportunity to choose we are BOTH team leaders, ah well…maybe next time.
So making a cake for Buddy’s son was
